This past weekend, we went to see Superman (okay, officially Man of Steel, but I’ll still call it Superman). The movie was awesome, and definitely lived up to my expectations. Although, I do have to say I was a little surprised that Amy Adams was cast as Lois Lane. I was expecting someone with darker features. Anyway, that is not the point of this post.
What made my movie experience even better than usual was that we were able to enjoy dinner and drinks while we were watching the movie! Instead of staying in Philly and going to the usual places for cinematic entertainment, we drove out to Collegeville, PA – one of the many homes of Movie Tavern.
The way it works: you purchase your tickets online for the movie and times you want, then show up at least 45 minutes ahead of the scheduled time so you can get a good seat. There is an in-house restaurant/ bar where you can sit to eat and drink before the movie if you like, and there was also another tiki bar in the lobby.
For some reason, I thought there would be actual table and chairs that you sit at during the movie, but not quite. The theater is set up like any other movie theater, but the seats are bigger and a lot more cushy and comfortable. There’s a side table attached to one of the arms of the chair that holds your drink and food.
As our tickets were checked, we were handed menus and as soon as we sat down our server came over to go over some specials and to point out the call button on our tables. It seemed to me there was a server for every row (or maybe every two rows). We first ordered drinks and appetizers, which came out pretty quickly. Then just as the previews were finishing up, we put in our main course orders, which came within 15 minutes or so.
What we ordered:
1 32 oz beer glass – yes, 32 oz and you get to keep the glass, and you can bring it back and fill it with anything you want
1 Caribbean Rum Punch (actually 2, because I had one before they let us into the theater) – delicious
Grilled Chicken Quesadillas – loved these
Kobe Beef Sliders with a side of fries – the meat was so tender
Chicken Tender Basket with a side of cheese fries – not what I expected and definitely not worth it. The tenders were kind of small and the fries were slightly soggy. In the future I would order it on the side.
Break down of the cost:
2 adult tickets for Man of Steel – $23
Food and Drinks – $70
So overall, this is probably less than you would spend on a regular dinner and a movie evening.
When I was first looking into this place, I did see some reviewers complain about the wait staff walking in the rows during the movie, but that is to be expected in a place where you can eat and drink while you enjoy your movie. I really loved the experience, and don’t think I’ll want to ever go to a regular movie theater again.
Have you ever been to Movie Tavern or a place like it?
